Friends of the Mason Tract

Mission
The mission of the Friends of the Mason Tract is to facilitate the maintenance and improvement of the of the Mason Tract under the auspices of South Branch Township and the guidance of the Department of Natural Resources.

Background

The Mason Tract is a 4,493-acre special management area along the South Branch of the Au Sable River, designed to protect the quality fishing waters of this area. The Mason Tract originated from acceptance of a 1500-acre gift from the George Mason family in 1954. The area offers quality fishing, hunting, hiking, cross country skiing and canoeing opportunities.   The Mason Tract is one of the finest wilderness tracts in the Lower Peninsula and is unique in its breadth of recreational opportunities.

The Friends of the Mason Tract was founded in May of 2009 via a Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Natural Resources and South Branch Township of Crawford County.
